“Curtis on Canvas” is the project selected for this year’s Art on the Lake Art & Music Festival’s silent auction. The silent auction is an annual fundraiser held in conjunction with Art on the Lake. Art on the Lake will be held on August 30th in the Erickson Center Park in Curtis. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Erickson Center for the Arts.

 

Participants are encouraged to use their imagination to decorate an 11’ x 14’ blank canvas to depict Curtis. A variety of mediums can be used. Painting a canvas is not the only option. Contributors to past Art on the Lake silent auctions have created astounding artwork. 

A canvas can be picked up at the Center during regular business hours and are immediately available through August 1st while the supply lasts. The canvas must be returned to the Center by August 22nd. If you need additional information please call the office at 906-586-9974.

2014 PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
 

The annual photography contest sponsored by The Erickson Center for the Arts’ is now open and accepting photographs for consideration. Four cash prizes will be awarded to the best photographers in two categories – Critic’s Choice and People’s Choice. A panel of judges will select first ($100 prize), second ($75 prize), and third place ($50 cash) winners to receive the Critic’s Choice awards, and attendees at Art on the Lake Art & Music Festival, on Saturday, August 30, 2014 will vote for the winner of the People’s Choice award ($75 prize).

 
Contest Rules:

1.   The photo must be taken in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan within the last 12 months.

2.   Resubmissions are not permitted.

3.  Photos must be 8 x 10-inches in size, and must not be matted or framed. The photo paper, including the border, must not exceed 8 ½ x 11-inches.

4.   Borders around the photos must be white.

5.   Send $5 entry fee along with a separate sheet of paper with name, address, email and telephone number clearly printed to: Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA), Attn: Photo Contest, P.O. Box 255, Curtis, MI 49820; or hand deliver to the Erickson Center for the Arts Administrative Office located at N9246 Saw-Wa-Quato Street in Curtis during office hours. Checks made payable to: Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA).

6.  Photos may be “cropped” but should be submitted “as taken” without computer changes or modifications.

7.  There is no age limit for this contest.

8. Entries must be received by Friday, August 15,2014.

9.  Enter as many times as you like. Each entry must include the $5 entry fee and a separate sheet of paper with name, address, and phone number clearly printed.

10. No identifying information (name, etc.) may be on photos.

11. All photos will become the property of The Erickson Center for the Arts and will be displayed after contest completion.

12. Winners will be announced at the Art on the Lake festival on Saturday, August 30, 2014. You need not be present to win.

13. Professional photographers are not eligible to enter.

14. Judging will be based on 1) Category relevance & following contest rules including size  2) Exposure 3) Color effectiveness  4) Creativity 5) Uniqueness 6) Artistry 7) Focus effects 8) Composition  9) Originality 10) Wow! Factor

Until the month of September, Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) will be displaying work from featured artist, Renee Michaud, who was selected through the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center.

 

After earning her degree in art education from Michigan State University in 1976, Michaud became a mixed media collage artist from the Upper Peninsula. Each of Michaud’s collages invites the viewer to come close and explore the images and stories represented.

he Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) presents the Chamber Music Program on Monday, August 11 at 7 p.m. This string quartet group from the Ann Arbor area will be playing a program entitled “The Killer Bs.”

 

Violinist Paul Lundin, cellist Daniel Thomas and violist Joseph Deller return for their fifth year playing together at the Erickson Center. This year, Violinist David Lamse, will be accompany the others for the program.

 

This year’s program will celebrate three of the most beloved composers of all time. The quartet group will be playing music from Bach, Beethoven and Brahms aka “The Killer B’s.”

 

 

Admission is free and donations are welcomed. Join us as we listen to the three “Killer B’s” performed by a very talented group of musicians.

On Wednesday, August 13 at 7 p.m., the Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) will be hosting a not-so-normal variety show, otherwise known as Follywood.

 

The annual variety show will include both live and “not so live” numbers, a reprise of the Divas and unusual dance numbers. Sit back, relax and let the multi-aged, local and Curtis style cast entertain you.

 

Advanced reserved tickets have been on sale since mid-July. Ticket prices are $15/adults and $5/students 18 and under. These can be purchased by visiting the ECA office in Curtis or by calling 906-586-9974. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

The Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) will be hosting this summer’s second Open Mic Night with MC John Latini. This event will take place during the ECA weekly Music in the Park on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m.

 

Interested in participating? Feel free to contact the Center to sign-up beforehand. Although pre-registration is appreciated it is not required, you’re more than welcome to sign-up the day of.

The Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) is hosting its 15th annual Art on the Lake Art & Music Festival. The festival will be held on Saturday, August 30th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Center’s lawn, overlooking South Manistique Lake.

 

This year the ECA plans to host an estimated 3 to 4 thousand people. The event will include musical entertainment from The Hozz and The Jill Jack Band, along with food, beverages, a silent auction and a children’s art tent.

 

Children will have the opportunity to decorate kites in the art tent from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. During this time, all children will be invited to join in the Children’s Parade, which meets at the tent at 1:30 p.m.

 

Several food vendors will compliment the Festival with food and beverage favorites throughout the day, including a variety of beer and wine.

 

This year’s silent auction project will feature “Curtis on Canvas,” showcasing the creative talents of many area residents. These masterpieces can be purchased by silent auction on the day of the Festival. In addition, the Kites that are displayed next to the Center will be sold for garden art at $10 a piece.

 

Before heading to the Festival, visitors are encouraged to attend the Manistique Lakes Lions Club in Curtis. Starting at 7 a.m. they will be serving an all-you-can-eat breakfast in the Community Building. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the ECA.

--> At 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, Brian Miller and Randy Gosa will showcase their traditional talents at the Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA). The duo will perform Irish-influenced music of men who roamed the Great Lakes region in the 1800s.

 

Miller and Gosa have performed this traditional Irish music with top musicians throughout the US and Ireland. Together they mix a passion of Northwood’s history and folklore with their love of arranging forgotten songs. The duo brings life to this rich but under-explored music.
