“Curtis on Canvas” is the project selected for this year’s Art on the Lake Art & Music Festival’s silent auction. The silent auction is an annual fundraiser held in conjunction with Art on the Lake. Art on the Lake will be held on August 30th in the Erickson Center Park in Curtis. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Erickson Center for the Arts.

 

Participants are encouraged to use their imagination to decorate an 11’ x 14’ blank canvas to depict Curtis. A variety of mediums can be used. Painting a canvas is not the only option. Contributors to past Art on the Lake silent auctions have created astounding artwork. 

A canvas can be picked up at the Center during regular business hours and are immediately available through August 1st while the supply lasts. The canvas must be returned to the Center by August 22nd. If you need additional information please call the office at 906-586-9974.

2014 PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
 

The annual photography contest sponsored by The Erickson Center for the Arts’ is now open and accepting photographs for consideration. Four cash prizes will be awarded to the best photographers in two categories – Critic’s Choice and People’s Choice. A panel of judges will select first ($100 prize), second ($75 prize), and third place ($50 cash) winners to receive the Critic’s Choice awards, and attendees at Art on the Lake Art & Music Festival, on Saturday, August 30, 2014 will vote for the winner of the People’s Choice award ($75 prize).

 
Contest Rules:

1.   The photo must be taken in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan within the last 12 months.

2.   Resubmissions are not permitted.

3.  Photos must be 8 x 10-inches in size, and must not be matted or framed. The photo paper, including the border, must not exceed 8 ½ x 11-inches.

4.   Borders around the photos must be white.

5.   Send $5 entry fee along with a separate sheet of paper with name, address, email and telephone number clearly printed to: Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA), Attn: Photo Contest, P.O. Box 255, Curtis, MI 49820; or hand deliver to the Erickson Center for the Arts Administrative Office located at N9246 Saw-Wa-Quato Street in Curtis during office hours. Checks made payable to: Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA).

6.  Photos may be “cropped” but should be submitted “as taken” without computer changes or modifications.

7.  There is no age limit for this contest.

8. Entries must be received by Friday, August 15,2014.

9.  Enter as many times as you like. Each entry must include the $5 entry fee and a separate sheet of paper with name, address, and phone number clearly printed.

10. No identifying information (name, etc.) may be on photos.

11. All photos will become the property of The Erickson Center for the Arts and will be displayed after contest completion.

12. Winners will be announced at the Art on the Lake festival on Saturday, August 30, 2014. You need not be present to win.

13. Professional photographers are not eligible to enter.

14. Judging will be based on 1) Category relevance & following contest rules including size  2) Exposure 3) Color effectiveness  4) Creativity 5) Uniqueness 6) Artistry 7) Focus effects 8) Composition  9) Originality 10) Wow! Factor

On Saturday, July 5 at 7:30 p.m., the Boogie Woogie Babies (BWB) will be at the Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA), taking the audience on a trip down Broadway. For only $15 the audience will be able to enjoy classics from shows such as Gypsy, Cabaret, Chicago, The Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, Wicked and more.

 

The BWB is a vocal trio, from the Grand Rapids area, touring throughout the Midwest since 1993. Their upbeat and entertaining shows are known for the trio’s tight harmonies, great songs, audience participation and trivia.

 

Advanced reserved tickets have been on sale since the beginning of June. These can be purchased by visiting the ECA office in Curtis or by calling 906-586-9974. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

On Thursday, July 10th, the nationally touring comedian, David Dyer, will be headlining a night of comedy at the Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA).

 

Dyer has worked with some of the best performers in the industry, including Drew Carey, Lewis Black and Kathleen Madigan. In addition, he’s appeared regularly on the nationally syndicated “The Bob and Tom Show,” which is broadcasted nationally out of Indianapolis, and has been a contributing writer to NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

 

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the ECA in Curtis. Tickets cost $15 a person. Advanced reserve tickets have been on sale since the beginning of June, which can be purchased by visiting the ECA office or by calling 906-586-9974. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

Until the month of September, Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA) will be displaying work from featured artist, Renee Michaud, who was selected through the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center.

 

After earning her degree in art education from Michigan State University in 1976, Michaud became a mixed media collage artist from the Upper Peninsula. Each of Michaud’s collages invites the viewer to come close and explore the images and stories represented.

On Thursday, July 17th, the Horsens Music School Big Band and Wanna Be Jazz Band will perform at the Erickson Center for the Arts (ECA). The group is sponsored by the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and will be traveling all the way from Horsens, Denmark, a city located near Copenhagen.

 

The Big Band consists of members ranging from 13-21 years of age, playing traditional jazz. Traveling with them is the Wanna Be Jazz band, made up of younger students working toward the Big Band. The Wanna Be consists of members ranging from 10-14 years of age.

 

Starting on July 7th, the two bands will begin their adventure in Iceland and Canada. They will then make their way to Michigan, stopping in Greenville before visiting the ECA here in Curtis. Band members will stay with host families in the Curtis area.

 

The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the ECA in Curtis, doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are always welcomed.
